Delhi: Only 12 types of fuel will be allowed in Delhi-NCR. This includes from petrol-diesel to electricity, CNG and charcoal. The Central Air Quality Management has issued instructions for all these fuels and their use in different areas. The Delhi-NCR region is included in the most polluted areas of the world. The major reason for this is the large scale industries located here, the large number of vehicles and the large scale construction work. The fuels used in all these areas are a major cause of pollution.

The entire NCR region is considered to have one airshed (uniform environment). In view of this, the Central Air Quality Management Commission has issued instructions for the use of uniform fuel across the region. According to the commission, where PNG infrastructure is present, only these fuels will be allowed to be used from October 1, whereas where PNG infrastructure is not present, only these fuels can be used from January 1, 2023. Whereas, the use of low sulfur coal in thermal power plants will be allowed.

These fuels can be used

1. Petrol (BS VI with 10 ppm sulphur) used as vehicle fuel

2. Diesel (BS VI with 10 ppm sulphur) used as vehicle fuel

3.Hydrogen and Methane: As Vehicles and Industrial Fuels

4.Natural Gas (CNG-PNG-LNG): Vehicles, Industries and Domestic Use

5.Petroleum Gas (LPG-Propane-Butane): Vehicles, Industries and Domestic Use

6. Electricity: Vehicles, Industries, Commercial and Domestic Use

7. Aviation Turbine Fuel

8.Biofuel (Bio-Alcohol, Bio-Diesel, Bio-Gas, CBG, Bio-CNG) : Industries, Vehicles and Domestic Use

9.Refuge Derived Fuel (RDF): Power Plant, Cement Plant, Waste to Energy Plant

10.Firewood: Biomass briquettes used for religious purposes

11. Use of wood-bamboo charcoal: in tandoors and grills (with carbon emission channelization or control systems) in hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, and in open-air restaurants and dhabas.

12. Charcoal: Use of electricity, CNG, wood or biomass briquettes in crematoriums for ironing clothes

Permission to be obtained for other fuels

According to the commission, the use of low sulfur coal will be allowed only for thermal power plants. Whereas, the use of any fuel other than the fuel specified in the above list in any category will have to take permission from the Commission. The Air Quality Management Commission will consider it on merit basis.

Vehicular smoke is responsible for 42% of pollution

Vehicular smoke is a major cause of pollution in Delhi. According to a research released by SAFAR about two years ago, vehicular smoke accounts for 42 per cent of the general pollution in Delhi. At the same time, stubble smoke becomes a main factor of pollution during the stubble season.
