Delhi CM Swearing: A grand ceremony was held today at the historic Ramlila Maidan in Delhi where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rekha Gupta took oath as the Chief Minister. The ceremony proved to be a watershed moment in Delhi politics as Gupta became the second woman Chief Minister of the capital.Rekha Gupta elected leader of legislative partyBefore the swearing-in, Rekha Gupta was unanimously elected leader in the BJP's legislative party meeting. Central observers were also present in this meeting. Eleven days after the election results were announced, the BJP staked claim to form the government. Gupta met Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and made a formal request to form the government.Emotional response and commitment to promisesBefore becoming the Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta said, "I have been entrusted with a big responsibility and I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the top leadership. I will fulfill this responsibility with all my ability, strength and honesty."He further said, "My first priority is to fulfill all the promises made by our party. Apart from this, all our 48 MLAs will work as a team to take Delhi to new heights of development."Presence of many bigwigs including PM Modi in the ceremonyApart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ruled states also attended the swearing-in ceremony. According to estimates, about 50,000 people attended the ceremony. Keeping security in mind, more than 25,000 security personnel were deployed in Central, North and New Delhi areas.Rekha Gupta: From struggle to successRekha Gupta was born in Haryana and started her political journey with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She has also been the President of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). She has done graduation in law from Delhi University.Her candidature was proposed by senior party leaders Pravesh Verma, Vijendra Gupta and Satish Upadhyay. All 48 BJP MLAs were present in the legislative party meeting and unanimously agreed on Gupta's name.Second woman Chief Minister of DelhiRekha Gupta has now become the second woman Chief Minister in the country after Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal). Her appointment is being considered an important strategic victory for the BJP, which will help the party strengthen its hold in Delhi.Way forwardAfter taking oath as Chief Minister, Gupta has many challenges ahead, including solving the basic problems of Delhi and fulfilling the party's election promises.
