Indian Coast Guard's ALH helicopter made an emergency landing at sea off Porbandar, Gujarat on 02 September 2024. The helicopter was sent to rescue an injured crew member. One crew member was rescued while search for three is underway.

Indian Coast Guard: An Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) faced an emergency situation in Porbandar, Gujarat on the night of 02 September 2024. The helicopter was sent for medical evacuation of an injured crew member on the motor tanker Hari Leela, but had to make an emergency landing in the sea.

How did the accident happen?

The Indian Coast Guard said on Twitter that the incident happened when the helicopter was approaching the ship Hari Leela located near Porbandar. One member has been found in an attempt to land the helicopter crew safely in the sea. However, the search for three other members is still on. The search team has found the wreckage of the helicopter and four ships and two aircraft have been deployed for the rescue operation.

Important role of ALH helicopter

It is worth noting that this ALH helicopter saved the lives of 67 people during the recent cyclone in Gujarat. The helicopter was dispatched for medical evacuation of a critically injured crew member on the Indian-flagged tanker Hari Leela, about 45 km from Porbandar.

The Indian Coast Guard responded immediately and launched a massive rescue operation. Four ships and two aircraft were dispatched to the site to search for the missing crew members and to secure the remains of the wreckage.
