On Sunday, BJP workers showed black flag to SP General Secretary Swami Prasad Maurya's convoy at Tengra Mod in Varanasi and protested. He had left Varanasi for Sonbhadra, when on the way Bharatiya Janata Party workers came in front of his convoy and started raising slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Har Har Mahadev'. BJP workers also threw cloth on the car of Swami Prasad Maurya.

However, the police stopped the workers on the spot and Maurya's convoy was immediately dispatched from there. However, none of the protesting workers has been arrested. Police said that no one has been arrested.

BJP workers said that Swami Prasad Maurya should apologize for the controversial statement made regarding Shriramcharitmanas. If they do not do this, then we will protest against them even further and will not allow them to come to Varanasi.

According to news agency PTI, SP leader Maurya had said, 'The real meaning of religion is the welfare of humanity and its strength. If a section of the society is insulted on the basis of caste, varna and class because of some lines of Shri Ramcharitmanas, then it is certainly not religion, it is unrighteousness. Some castes such as Teli and Kumhar have been named in some lines of Ramcharitmanas. This hurts the sentiments of lakhs of people.

He had said, 'The objectionable lines written in Ramcharitmanas should be banned, which insults a section of the society on the basis of caste, class and varna.'
