The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday summoned former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to question him in a money laundering case related to a multi-crore bribery and extortion racket. But Anil Deshmukh has appealed to be given some other date to appear before the investigating agency.

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday summoned former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to question him in a money laundering case related to a multi-crore bribery and extortion racket. But Anil Deshmukh has appealed to be given some other date to appear before the investigating agency. Following this, former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate next week for questioning.

What did Deshmukh's lawyer say?

NCP leader Deshmukh was asked to appear before the investigating officer of the case at the ED office located in Ballard Estate area here, officials said. He said that Deshmukh's team of lawyers reached the ED office and appealed for some other date for his appearance, they also handed over a letter written by Deshmukh. Advocate Jaywant Patil said outside the ED office, 'Deshmukh will not appear today. We have not been given any documents related to this matter. We have given a letter to the ED, seeking these documents and the details of the case in which they are to be interrogated. We will give our reply accordingly.

two associates arrested

Earlier, the central agency had arrested Deshmukh's personal secretary Sanjeev Palande and personal assistant Kundan Shinde late on Friday night. Earlier, the ED had conducted raids at the locations of Deshmukh, Palande and Shinde in Mumbai and Nagpur. After the raid, Palande and Shinde were brought to the ED office and later arrested. An MPMLA court in Mumbai sent both of them to ED custody till July 1. The CBI had initiated a preliminary inquiry after registering a routine case on the orders of the Bombay High Court, following which Deshmukh and others were booked by the ED.

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh had leveled bribery allegations against Deshmukh and the court had directed the probe agency to probe these allegations. Deshmukh had resigned as the Home Minister of Maharashtra in April following these allegations. He has denied these allegations.
