Earthquake epicenter and tremors

According to the US Geological Survey and Germany's GFZ Geoscience Center, the epicenter of this earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) near Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city. After the main shock, another powerful tremor of 6.4 magnitude was felt, making the situation even more serious.

Declaration of emergency in Myanmar

Myanmar's military government has declared an emergency in six regions and states, including the capital Naypyitaw and Mandalay. But due to the long-running civil war, providing relief to many affected areas is proving difficult.

The Red Cross Society said relief efforts in Mandalay, Sagaing and southern Shan state were hampered by downed power lines and damaged roads. Initial reports indicate the earthquake has caused widespread devastation and data is being collected to understand humanitarian needs.

Destruction and relief work in Bangkok

According to Bangkok rescue worker Songwut Wangpon, a laborer died when debris from a collapsed building hit his truck. At the same time, Thailand's Defense Minister Phumtham Vechayachai said that so far three people have died in this earthquake and 90 people are missing. Rescue operations are underway, but relief work is being hindered due to the debris of the collapsed building being very unstable.

A video of a high-rise building collapsing near Bangkok's famous Chatuchak market went viral on social media. In this video, a multi-storey building along with a crane is seen falling in a cloud of dust, while people present there are seen running here and there in panic.

Panic atmosphere in Bangkok

The entire Bangkok was shaken by the tremors of the earthquake. People working in the city's high-rise buildings were evacuated. The elevated rapid transit system and subways were closed. According to the Disaster Management Department of Bangkok, the effect of this earthquake was felt throughout Thailand. Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra called an emergency meeting to assess the impact of this disaster.

20 killed in Myanmar, damage to historical heritage

The earthquake caused massive devastation in Myanmar. Mandalay's historic former royal palace and many buildings were damaged. A 90-year-old bridge collapsed in Sagaing region, which also damaged the highway connecting Mandalay and Yangon.

Religious places and houses have also been damaged in Myanmar's capital Naypyitaw. So far 20 deaths have been confirmed.

Earthquake's effect in China too

The effect of the earthquake was also felt in China's Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Some houses were damaged and several people were injured in the Chinese city of Ruili, bordering Myanmar. According to Chinese media reports, the tremors in Ruili and Mangshi were so strong that people were unable to even stand.
