Afghanistan Earthquake: Yesterday's terrible earthquake in Afghanistan has caused huge devastation. News agency AP quoted Taliban spokesperson as saying that so far more than 2000 people have died in the country due to the earthquake. Thousands of people are injured. The latest earthquake is one of the deadliest earthquakes to hit the country in two decades. Appealing for immediate help, the spokesperson of the country's Ministry of Information and Culture, Abdul Wahid Rayan, said that about 6 villages have been destroyed by the earthquake and hundreds of citizens are buried under the debris.
Regarding the earthquake, the United Nations has said that the number of casualties in the country may increase further, because search and rescue operations are going on. According to media reports, some people may be trapped under the collapsed buildings. Meanwhile, Disaster Authority spokesperson Mohammad Abdullah Jan has said that four villages in Zenda Jan district of Herat province have been most damaged by the earthquake.The Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was about 40 kilometers northwest of Herat city. After the earthquake, there were three strong aftershocks, whose intensity was 6.3, 5.9 and 5.5. After these tremors, light tremors were also felt.
