Odisha / Husband jumps into wife’s funeral pyre, succumbs to burn injuries

Unable to undergo the loss of his spouse who died of a cardiac arrest, a 60-year-old tribal guy from Kalahandi, who was an elected member of the neighbourhood gram panchayat, jumped into the burning pyre of his spouse hours after her death. He later succumbed to his injuries. ​​Kalahandi SP Vivek Saravana stated, Raibati Sabar, 57 of Sialjodi village of Kalahandi district, was passed away on Tuesday.

​​Kalahandi SP Vivek Saravana stated, Raibati Sabar, 57 of Sialjodi village of Kalahandi district, was passed away on Tuesday after struggling a cardiac arrest. Her husband Nilamani and 4 sons together with other relatives took her remains to the village crematorium for the closing rites. After finishing the commonplace funeral rituals, Raibati was laid to rest at the pyre.


As the own circle of relatives participants had been on their way home from the crematorium, Nilamani took every person by surprise and ran back to the pyre. “By the time the family members ought to react, Nilamani had suffered intense burns,” stated Saravana.


Incidentally, Sabar and his spouse lived separately. SDPO of Dharmagarh D Chopdar stated he is looking into the incident. “Not much can be revealed at this stage. Police are nonetheless investigating,” he stated.
