India / IMD issues red alert in Mumbai as heavy rainfall continues

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts following heavy rains. The IMD has predicted that the city will continue to receive heavy downpour for the next 48 hours. The Bandra Kurla Complex (East) received 201 mm rain, Colaba 152 mm and Santa Cruz 159.4 mm since Wednesday, as per the weather department.

Mumbai: Heavy rains continue to lash Mumbai for the third consecutive day and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next two days for Mumbai and its adjoining areas.

The weather agency has said that the island city will continue to receive heavy downpour for nearly six more hours. 

"As seen in Radar, R/F is ocurng over Mumbai & likely to cont over it next 6 hours. Heavy rainfall at iso places is likely to be realized over Mumbai during next 06 hours. It is very much in concurrence with our forecast of SCT Heavy to very H r/f with iso Extremely heavy falls.," IMD said in a tweet.

Several areas, including Bandra, Bandra Kurla Complex (East), Santacruz, Colaba, Mahalaxmi, Ram Mandir and NSC (Worli) stations of Mumbai have reported over 10 cm of rainfall, IMD said.

The regional Met Centre in Mumbai has predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rains in the city and suburbs along with very heavy rains at some isolated places. 

Due to rains, several areas have been waterlogged.
