India-Canada Relations: On Thursday, the central government expressed serious concerns over the current bilateral relations between India and Canada in Parliament. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh said in a written reply that India-Canada relations are still going through a challenging phase. He questioned the political asylum given to extremist and separatist elements in Canada.

India's objection to extremist activities

The minister said that some elements in Canada are engaged in violent activities against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. These elements have not only glorified the killing of India's leaders, but have also threatened Indian diplomats and damaged religious places.

The Indian government has repeatedly demanded Canada to take strict action against these elements. Despite this, the Canadian government has not taken any concrete action so far, which has further complicated the relations between the two countries.

Referendum issue

Singh also expressed concern over the so-called referendum in Canada, which is organized by separatist elements to promote the disintegration of India. India has clearly urged the Canadian government to stop such activities, but the expected steps have not been taken on this either.

Questions on the safety of Indian citizens and diplomats

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs also pointed out that the Canadian government has been unable to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and commercial properties. Recently, Canada stopped the supply of consular and passport services to Indian diplomats, causing serious difficulties to Indian citizens.

Eye on trade relations

However, despite tensions in political and security relations, trade relations between India and Canada are growing. Bilateral trade reached $ 9.36 billion in the year 2023, with India's exports being $ 5.56 billion. Canada is India's 17th largest investor with an investment of $ 3.9 billion.

India's priority: Safety of citizens

The government also made it clear that the safety and welfare of Indian citizens in Canada is of paramount importance. Indian officials maintain active dialogue with the Canadian government to resolve any problems.

Conclusion

The current tensions in India-Canada relations have hindered bilateral cooperation. There is a need for dialogue on issues of security, diplomatic support, and political tolerance. While there is potential in economic relations, lasting solutions should be the priority of the political leadership of both countries.
