India-Canada Relations: India and Canada's relations have gone through many ups and downs in the last few years. These relations saw sharp tensions after the killing of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. India recalled its High Commissioner and expelled six Canadian diplomats after Canada accused Indian officials of involvement in the murder investigation. In response, Canada also recalled its ambassador, bringing the diplomatic relations between the two countries to a low level.Improving relations amid Donald Trump's tariff threatsRecently, India and Canada have been making efforts to improve their relations amid former US President Donald Trump's tariff policies and possible trade sanctions. According to a Bloomberg report, both countries are considering sending back their diplomats, thereby re-establishing diplomatic dialogue. This is a positive sign that both countries are trying to move forward leaving the disputes behind.New round of intelligence cooperation and talksThe Bloomberg report also pointed out that Canadian intelligence chief Daniel Rogers recently attended an intelligence conference hosted by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi. The meeting could be an important step towards resuming dialogue between the two countries. In addition, a possible meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney is also being speculated at the Group of Seven (G7) summit to be held in Alberta, Canada in June. India is an observer country of the G7, and talks could be held to improve relations between the two countries using this platform.Future of India-Canada relationsAlthough there are still many contentious issues between the two countries, recent developments indicate that both sides are keen to improve relations. There is a need to promote mutual understanding in areas such as trade, investment, education and technical cooperation. If India and Canada succeed in strengthening their diplomatic relations by resolving the disputes, it will be a positive sign not only for the two countries but also for global politics.
