Delhi Mayor Election: In the mayor election of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Mahesh Khinchi defeated the BJP candidate and took over as the new mayor of Delhi. In this election held on Thursday, AAP got 133 votes, while BJP got 130 votes. AAP's victory was confirmed after the votes of two councilors were declared invalid. However, during the mayor election, a lot of ruckus was seen in the Civic Center, in which Congress councilors walked out of the House and accused the AAP mayor of compromising with the rights of the Dalit community.

Congress boycotts the election, ruckus in the House

The Congress party decided not to support any candidate, boycotting the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Congress councilors accused the AAP mayor in the House of ignoring the interests of the Dalit community. All eight Congress councilors walked out of the House and expressed their protest. Congress has expressed dissatisfaction with AAP over the selection of a Dalit mayor in a limited term, and for this reason decided to boycott the election.

Congress councilor Sabila Begum supports AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party has claimed that Congress councilor Sabila Begum has resigned from the party and supported the AAP candidate. Sabila Begum wrote a letter to the Congress president making it clear that the Congress' decision not to participate in the election will directly benefit the BJP. After the Congress' decision to walk out in the last mayor election, she had to face the public's anger in her ward. For this reason, she left the Congress party and has decided to support the AAP.

BJP claims - will bring MCD out of inactivity

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said during this election that every worker of the party is committed to lead Delhi on the path of development. If the BJP mayor was elected, the MCD would be brought out of inactivity and work would be done for the public. At the same time, BJP MP Kamaljit Sehrawat said that this election is not for the party but for the purpose of improving the condition of Delhi, and she hoped that the BJP mayor would be elected.

Tough competition between AAP and BJP in mayor election

AAP had fielded councillor Mahesh Khinchi from Devnagar for the post of mayor in this election, while BJP had fielded Kishan Lal from Shakurpur. Aam Aadmi Party won with a marginal majority in the House, in which they had 142 votes including Rajya Sabha MPs, MLAs and councillors, while BJP had a total of 122 votes including MPs and councillors.

Mahesh Khinchi's victory has strengthened the power of AAP in Delhi Municipal Corporation and this defeat can prove to be a big challenge for BJP.
