Delhi Politics: The Delhi Mayor election will finally be held on November 14, the order of which has been issued by the current Mayor Shelly Oberoi. This decision has been taken after several months of waiting and several failed attempts. Shelly Oberoi had already indicated last month that the mayoral election would be held in November. The mayoral election in Delhi has been continuously postponed for the last six months, in which the election could not be held due to differences and obstacles on many issues.

Order of Mayor Election and Meeting Schedule

The order issued by Mayor Shelly Oberoi states that the postponed April (2024) meeting of the Delhi Municipal Corporation and the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on November 14, 2024 at 2 pm at Aruna Asaf Ali Auditorium, Civic Center, New Delhi. After this meeting, other postponed meetings of the year 2024 - January, May, June, July, August and September - will also be held from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm respectively.

The announcement was made after the uproar last month

On October 28, Mayor Shelly Oberoi had postponed the meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and announced the mayoral election in November. This election has been pending since April, and opposition councillors raised the demand for mayoral elections several times during this period. In the last meeting too, there was an uproar in the House due to the late appearance of the mayor. The councillors had raised slogans over issues like pollution in Delhi and delay in mayoral elections, which disrupted the proceedings.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi had assured the opposition members during the meeting that elections would be held in the next meeting. But when the uproar continued, she adjourned the House after passing some resolutions.

Reserved seat for the third term and delay in election

The election for the post of mayor in Delhi is reserved for a Dalit candidate this time, which is the third term this year. This election has been pending for a long time, and due to this, a situation of uproar arose in the corporation several times. All eyes are on the mayoral election this time too, as many political parties are ready with their candidates.

Long-postponed elections and political obstacles

The election for the post of Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation has been postponed several times in 2024. Even during the earlier election attempts, the election could not be successful due to uproar and controversies. This time the mayoral election will be organized with special security and arrangements so that the election can be conducted peacefully by learning from the previous uproars.

What does this election say for the political scenario of Delhi?

The election of the Delhi Mayor is considered to be an important political event, as it will not only decide the leadership of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, but it will also play an important role in solving the primary problems of the city like pollution, infrastructure and other civic issues.

This election to be held on November 14 is also expected to change the political atmosphere of Delhi, as this time a very tough competition is being seen between the ruling party and the opposition in the corporation.
