US-China Tariff War: The ongoing tariff war between the US and China is once again in the eyes of the world. Recently, the US has imposed a massive tariff of up to 145 percent on China, which has further deepened the trade tension between the two countries. The impact of this tariff game is not limited to the US and China, but its echo is being felt in the entire global economy.Impact of tariff war on global economyThe imposition of tariffs is increasing trade barriers between the two countries, which is not only affecting imports and exports, but the global supply chain has also become unstable. The new tariffs imposed by the US are aimed at putting China under economic pressure, but China is also not ready to back down. This tug of war between these two superpowers is giving rise to uncertainty and inflation in the markets all over the world.Responsibility of the US and China on the environmentAlong with the tariff war, another serious issue has come to the fore – plastic pollution. According to a recent research, 268 million tonnes of plastic waste was generated worldwide in 2022. China and America had the largest share in this, which not only produce the most plastic but also spread the most waste.Plastic production and consumptionA total of 400 million tonnes of plastic was produced in 2022. America's share in this was 42% and China's was 32%. India's share was only 5%, which is very low in proportion to its population. America was at the forefront in terms of plastic consumption, where 216 kg of plastic was used per person. In comparison, this number was very low in India.Global scenario of plastic wasteAccording to the report, China generated 81.5 million tonnes and America 40.1 million tonnes of plastic waste. The European Union and India were included in this list with 30 million and 9.5 million tonnes of waste respectively. India, which is home to 17% of the world's population, used only 6% of the plastic and the amount of its waste was also comparatively much less.India's position in recyclingTalking about recycling, the European Union recycled about 20% of plastic waste, while the US was limited to just 5%. India has performed relatively better in this direction and has set a positive example on global standards by controlling its plastic use and production.Need for shared responsibilityWhile the US and China are embroiled in a tariff war for economic dominance, they also need to introspect on the front of environmental responsibility. The plastic crisis has today become a global problem, which can be resolved only when the big economies understand their responsibility and take concrete steps. Although India's role has been responsible so far, it will also have to be cautious due to increasing population and industrialization.
