UPI Rules Change / Paytm, PhonePe users please note! UPI will not work on these mobile numbers from April 1

There is going to be a change in the rules related to UPI from April 1. NPCI has instructed that mobile numbers which have been inactive for a long time should be removed from the bank account. Its purpose is to prevent cyber fraud. If your number is inactive, then update it immediately so that there is no problem in payment.

UPI Rules Change: If you make UPI payments through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, then you must know about the new rules from April 1. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed that those mobile numbers linked to UPI should be removed from the bank account, which are not active for a long time. If your bank account is linked to a number that is no longer active, then there may be a problem in UPI transactions.

Reason for implementing new rules

NPCI has taken this decision keeping in mind the increasing cases of cyber crime. When a mobile number becomes inactive and the telecom operator issues it to another person, it increases the chances of fraud. NPCI believes that inactive mobile numbers can also cause technical problems in banking and UPI systems.

Why is it necessary to link mobile number?

It is mandatory to have a mobile number linked to the bank account to make UPI payments. When you make a payment, your mobile number ensures that the money reaches the right person. If your number has been deactivated and issued to someone else, your transaction may fail or money may reach the wrong account.

What should you do?

  • If your bank account is linked to a mobile number that is no longer active or that you have not recharged for a long time, you should take these steps immediately:
  • Check with your telecom operator – Make sure your number is still active in your name. Contact Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL customer care to confirm this.
  • Update mobile number in the bank – If your number has been deactivated, go to the bank and get the new mobile number updated in your account.
  • Update in UPI apps – Do not forget to update the new number in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or other UPI apps.
NPCI's new directive

NPCI has directed all banks and UPI apps to update the list of mobile numbers that have been deactivated every week. After April 1, it will be ensured that no inactive mobile number remains in the banking system.

Conclusion

If you want to continue using UPI smoothly, contact your bank and telecom operator as soon as possible and ensure that your mobile number is active. By following these rules, you can also avoid cyber fraud and make your digital transactions safe.
