India / Red Fort to be shut for public from July 21 till Independence Day

Delhi's Red Fort will be shut for the visitors from July 21 till Independence Day celebrations on August 15 are over, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) stated. This comes after the Delhi Police on July 12 had suggested that the Red Fort should be shut from July 15 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and security reasons.

New Delhi: According to an order from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Red Fort will be shut for the public from July 21 till the Independence Day celebrations are over on August 15. This is longer that the usual duration where the fort is closed for the public for a week ahead of Independence Day, as per officials.

The ASI order stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 6 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, the Director General, Archaeological Survey of India hereby direct that there shall be no entry inside the Red Fort from the morning of 21st July, 2021 to 15th August, 2021 till the Independence Day Celebration is over.”

Earlier on July 12, the Delhi Police had suggested in a letter that the Red Fort be closed from July 15 in lieu of security reasons and COVID-19 pandemic.
