Manipur Violence: The series of violence in Manipur is not stopping. The rocket bomb attack by Kuki militants on the house of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng on Friday once again made the situation tense. An elderly man was killed and five people were injured in this attack carried out at 3 pm. The attack took place about four kilometers from the hill in Moirang, where the elderly man who was preparing for a religious program died.

Memories of the former Chief Minister and his contributions

Congress leader Mairembam Koireng has been the first Chief Minister of Manipur and has played an important role in the development of the state. He made an important place in the politics of the state by being the Chief Minister from 1963 to 1968. He passed away on 27 December 1994, but his memories and contributions are still fresh in the hearts of the people.

Drone Attack: A New Crisis

The recent drone attacks in Manipur have made the situation even more complicated. Three people, including a woman, were injured and two people were killed in the drone attacks that took place between September 1 and 3. This is the first time Manipur has been attacked through drones, and there is widespread concern in the state about it. Technical assistance and training for drone warfare is suspected to be coming from Myanmar.

Anti-drone measures and security efforts

In view of these incidents, the central government has approved the use of anti-drone medium machine guns for the first time in Manipur. DGP Rajeev Singh said that understanding the seriousness of the drone attacks, he has consulted the Director General of NSG in Delhi and other experts. Additionally, companies of 198 central forces have been deployed to strengthen security in the hilly areas.

Local situation and human rights crisis

After the drone attack, all 17 families of Koutruk village have left the village and moved to safer places. The incident has created panic among the locals and raised fears of closure of colleges. Local resident Priyokumar has decided to leave the village due to lack of security, which shows the gravity of the situation.

Demands of Kuki-Zo organizations and political equations

Kuki-Zo organizations have demanded the creation of a separate Kukiland in Manipur, which should be made a Union Territory. They argue that a Union Territory with an assembly on the lines of Puducherry can take the state out of ethnic conflict. However, the Manipur government says that the voice of the Chief Minister has been tampered with and efforts are being made to derail the peace initiative.

Investigating the roots of Manipur violence

Violence in Manipur started in March 2023 due to a dispute between the Kuki and Meitei communities over reservation. So far 226 people have died, and more than 1100 people have been injured. More than 65 thousand people have left their homes. The demand of the Meitei community to get tribal status and the opposition of the Kuki-Naga community has further complicated the situation.

Conclusion

The situation of violence and terrorism in Manipur is extremely worrying. Attacks by Kuki militants and drone attacks have posed a new challenge to security. Despite the efforts of the state government and the central government, concrete steps need to be taken towards the safety and peace of the local people. Comprehensive and effective strategies are needed to resolve this crisis, so that restoration of stability and peace in Manipur is possible.
