Cricket / Shakib breaks Malinga's record for taking most wickets in T20I cricket history

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has broken former Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga’s record for taking most wickets in T20I cricket history. Shakib took two wickets in Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2021 opener against Scotland on Sunday, taking his tally of wickets in T20I cricket to 108 in 89 matches. Malinga had taken 107 wickets in 84 T20I matches.

Cricket Desk: Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Sunday became the highest wicket-taker in men's T20 International cricket during their ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Group B match against Scotland in Al Amerat, Oman.

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and opted to bowl first. Then the bowlers took over, with Mohammad Saifuddin first removing Scotland skipper Kyle Coetzer in the 3rd over. Mahedi Hasan took a couple in the 8th over, those of Matthew Cross and George Munsey.

Then, Shakib joined the hunt with a double in the 11th over by removing Richie Berrington and Michael Leask. With the second wicket, he overtook Sri Lanka legend Lasith Malinga (107 in 84 matches) to become the highest wicket-taker.

New Zealand's Tim Southee is third in the list with 99 in 83 matches.

Shakib finished his spell with figures of 2/17. The 34-year-old is playing in his 89th T20I match. He also has 1763 runs with nine fifties. He is the only cricketer to have a double of 100 wickets and 1000 plus runs in this format.
