Smriti Irani remembers Sushma Swaraj

Union Minister Smriti Irani also remembered the BJP leader on her birth anniversary with a heartwarming post on Instagram. Posting a picture of Sushma Swaraj and herself, Irani revealed how every year, on February 14, her first call would always be to Sushma Swaraj.

Smriti Irani wrote, "She was the first call on the 14 th of Feb every year...breaking into peals of laughter when I said...birthday nahi Valentine wish karne ke liye phone kiya...joyous in her response she would make a promise to catch up over a meal or a cup of tea ... the victory lunch of Amethi was so planned that she took care to book a table at her favourite restaurant herself, sent a saree for me to wear that day...a table, a meal we could partake in no more (sic)."

Swaraj was only the second woman after Indira Gandhi to serve the External Affairs Ministry portfolio in the history of Independent India. She was given the EAM portfolio after the Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power in 2014 with an emphatic victory.

Swaraj won from Vidisha, located about 58 km from Bhopal, in the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha polls. She died on August 6, 2019, at the age of 67.
