Although there is no mention of the immersion of the idol of Ganesha in the texts, but it happens due to traditions. This tradition has started from the story of Veda Vyas and Ganesh ji who wrote the Mahabharata. In which the heat had increased in the body of Ganesh ji while writing the Mahabharata, then Vyas ji gave him a bath. Since then it is believed that after the establishment of Ganpati, immersion should be done.

Plant a sapling after immersion because it is auspicious time

Dr. Mishra explains that on this day there is a time for planting trees and plants due to the presence of Ghetnisha and Shatabhisha Nakshatra. Because Varahamihira has mentioned some special constellations for planting trees and plants in the texts. Two of those constellations will remain on September 9. Therefore, after Ganpati immersion, it will be auspicious to plant Tulsi, Neem, Ashok, Amla or any revered tree and plant in the same soil.

Explaining why immersion is done in water, Dr. Bhargava says that water is one of the five elements. By dissolving in it, the iconic idol of Pran merges into its original element. It is through water that the corporeal form of Lord Ganesha becomes formless. It is also a symbol of oneness of God. Hence the importance of immersion in water.

According to a legend related to this, Maharishi Ved Vyas was looking for a good writer to write Mahabharata. Then Ganeshji agreed for this. But he also put a condition that as long as the Maharishi speaks without stopping, he will also continue to write. Ved Vyas started reciting Mahabharata from the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganeshji continued to write the story for 10 consecutive days. Ganeshji's body temperature had increased due to continuous writing till the completion of the story. Maharishi Ved Vyas bathed him in the lake. It was the day of Anant Chaturdashi. Hence the tradition of idol immersion began.

new beginning immersion

Dr. Bhargava says that this year the resolution taken to do good deeds and leave evil with Ganesha's establishment. After Ganpati Visarjan, a new beginning should be started with this. If Ganpati comes, he brings good fortune and prosperity. The time of new beginning starts with immersion to work hard for the whole year to get it.
