Vladimir Putin: The Kremlin complex witnessed an emotional moment on Wednesday evening when Russian President Vladimir Putin met three hostages released by Hamas. These hostages included Sasha Trufanov, his mother Elena Trufanova and fellow former captive Sapir Cohen. The meeting was not just a formal courtesy, but a human moment, which saw a deep mix of suffering, hope and diplomacy.Putin spoke to the hostages and congratulated them on their release and said that this success was possible due to Russia's long and stable relations with Palestinian organizations and representatives. He said in clear words, "We should express our gratitude to Hamas, which cooperated in this humanitarian effort."498 days of sufferingHostage Sasha Trufanov told President Putin that he was detained in Gaza for 498 days. His mother Elena and partner Cohen were kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on 7 October 2023. Sasha's father Vitaly was killed in a Hamas-led attack that day, while her grandmother Irena Tati was also held hostage. The three women were released during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023. But those days of pain, fear and uncertainty are still visible in their eyes. Putin wished for the speedy release of the rest of the hostages on this occasion, saying, "I wish that those who are still hostages return safely soon."Diplomatic efforts and Russia's roleThe meeting was not just an expression of emotions, but it also highlighted Russia's global diplomatic position and its mediating role. The Russian Foreign Ministry met senior Hamas officials in Moscow in February. At that time a deputy Russian foreign minister had pressured Hamas for the release of Trufanov and another hostage, Maxim Harkin.According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, this conversation took place just a few days before Trufanov's release. Maxim Harkin, who is from the Donbass region of Ukraine and has Russian ties, is still reported to be in Hamas custody.Emotional connection and humanitarian messageThis Kremlin meeting also shows that global politics is not just a game of strategies and alliances, but it also has a deeply human aspect involved. Putin's presence and his direct communication with the hostages is an indication that Russia is playing its role seriously in such humanitarian matters.
