It is rare in the Mumbai film industry that press shows of two big films are held at the same time on the same Friday. But this time it was more of a clash of egos. Maddock Films' new offering 'Chhava' and Jio Studios' 'Captain America: Brave New World' were face to face. With the release of both the films, the curiosity among cinema lovers was at its peak.

Film based on the life of Shambhu Raje

The film 'Chhava' is based on the life of Maratha warrior Sambhaji Maharaj. This film holds special significance for the audience of Maharashtra as it brings alive the heroic saga of the son of their beloved Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on screen. But be careful, this is not a light-hearted entertaining film, but a very serious and sensitive historical presentation.

From Shivaji Sawant's pen to screen

Based on Marathi litterateur Shivaji Sawant's novel 'Chhava', the story of this film covers nine years of Sambhaji Maharaj's life. The conflict between Sambhaji, who took over the throne of Raigad after Shivaji's death, and the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb has been prominently shown in it. The film has been made with history at the center, but questions may arise about the authenticity of its facts.

Climax: Too gruesome?

The climax of the film is quite intense and sensitive. This scene may be uncomfortable for those who are not used to seeing more brutality. Aurangzeb is insulted by calling him 'Aurang' and his daughter is presented as a ruthless villain. Especially, the scenes of torturing Sambhaji Maharaj may disturb the audience of the film.

Vicky Kaushal's strong acting

Vicky Kaushal has once again proved the depth of his acting. After films like 'Sardar Udham' and 'Sam Bahadur', he has completely adapted himself to his character in 'Chava' as well. His performance makes it seem like he might be in the race for another National Award.

Female cast: Performances of Rashmika Mandanna and Divya Dutta

Rashmika Mandanna has played the role of Yesubai, but her character has been kept limited. Her role is mostly limited to performing aarti for her husband who has returned from war and creating pathos. On the other hand, Divya Dutta has given a strong performance as Shivaji's second wife Soyrabai. Her role seems more effective in the film.

Impressive cast of supporting cast

Vineet Singh has done a great job as Kavi Kalash. His dialogues and poetry add life to the film. Akshaye Khanna has filled the role of Aurangzeb with amazing negative energy, which fulfills the long-standing lack of a strong villain in Hindi cinema. Ashutosh Rana's character is not as effective as he is capable of.

Weak side of the film: A.R. Rahman's music

The weakest link of the film is its background music. Despite the name of a legendary composer like A.R. Rahman being attached, the background score is not very impressive. There is no song in the film that will last for a long time.

Technical Aspects: Cinematography and Action

The cinematography of the film is average and the sets seem artificial at many places. Some scenes in the action sequence are inspiring, but at many places it seems like the fights of old TV serials. However, the war scenes in the climax remind one of the film '300' to some extent.

Final Conclusion

'Chava' is for those who are interested in historical films and like Vicky Kaushal's acting. This film tests the patience of the audience and may also distract some people in the climax. If you have a sensitive heart, then think twice before watching this film. However, if you like history and heroic sagas, then this film can be a good cinematic experience for you.
