‘Sikandar’: Salman Khan’s Stardom or Audience’s Test?
In 2025, Salman Khan's new film ‘Sikandar’ hit the screens, but this time, the buzz around the film is more negative than positive. Despite being named after the historic conqueror Alexander (Sikandar), the film has nothing to do with history. Instead, it is a melodramatic love story that heavily relies on Salman Khan's stardom to draw audiences. Unfortunately, the film lacks the charm and appeal that his earlier movies once had.
The Plot: Feels Like ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ Part 2
The storyline offers little novelty. Salman Khan plays Sanjay Rajkot, a royal king who owns 25% of the country’s total gold. He marries a young woman who is constantly worried about his safety. The narrative feels like a continuation of ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, with the same royal setup, emotional drama, and larger-than-life grandeur.
However, the film’s second half appears to be inspired by ‘Jai Ho’. Sanjay’s wife meets a tragic accident and, before dying, donates her heart, lungs, and eyes to three different people. Sanjay takes a vow to protect them. The twist? A politician, whose son is killed, now seeks to eliminate all three recipients of the organs. The plot stretches this conflict but lacks the emotional grip to engage the audience.
Performances: Salman’s Shadow, the Real Sikandar Missing
Throughout the film, it often feels as though Salman Khan is not truly present. In many long shots and back-to-camera scenes, it appears as if a body double is being used. Salman’s physical appearance seems inconsistent, creating a sense of disconnection for the viewers.
Rashmika Mandanna, playing Salman’s wife, delivers a lackluster performance. Her expressions lack emotional depth, making her character feel superficial. Prateik Babbar, who plays a corrupt politician’s son, appears overdramatic, making his performance feel forced rather than menacing.
Direction: A.R. Murugadoss Fails to Impress
The film is directed by A.R. Murugadoss, known for blockbusters like ‘Ghajini’. However, in ‘Sikandar’, he fails to maintain control over the narrative. The film is riddled with disjointed scenes, clichéd dialogues, and uninspired emotional tracks. The screenplay lacks cohesion, making it difficult for the audience to stay emotionally invested.
Music: Forgettable Tunes
The music by Sameer Anjaan and Pritam is underwhelming. The title track, inspired by ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’'s iconic song, fails to evoke the same magic. The songs are forgettable and lack the potential to leave a lasting impression.
Why ‘Sikandar’ Fails to Connect?
-
Lack of originality: The film offers nothing new. It feels like a rehash of previously seen stories.
-
Weak emotional connection: The characters fail to create an emotional bond with the audience.
-
Lackluster performances: While Salman Khan’s presence is powerful, his performance lacks the depth it once had.
-
Weak direction: Murugadoss fails to maintain a consistent tone, making the film feel scattered.
-
Forgettable music: The soundtrack fails to enhance the narrative or leave a mark.
Verdict: Salman’s Stardom No Longer Enough
‘Sikandar’ is a high-budget film but lacks soul. Salman Khan’s star power is the film’s only selling point, but the weak storyline, poor direction, and average performances bring it down. Fans might still flock to the theaters out of loyalty, but they are likely to leave disappointed.
