Donald Trump's tariff policy has raised global concerns. Bangladesh's Khalilur Rahman assured the public that there is no need to panic about the 37% reciprocal tariff. There is a plan to increase cotton, fuel and machinery imports from the US to reduce the trade surplus. Talks are ongoing.

Tariff War: US President Donald Trump's new tariff policy has created a stir in the global business world. While countries like Canada, Mexico, China and India have raised concerns and protests, Bangladesh has adopted a balanced and strategic stance on the issue. Despite the 37% reciprocal tariff imposed on US exports, the Bangladeshi leadership has set an example of restraint and prudence by reassuring the public.

Bangladesh's restraint in response to US tariffs

After an emergency high-level meeting convened at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Saturday, High Representative of the Chief Advisor Khalilur Rahman made it clear that there is no need to panic about this new tariff policy. He said that the Bangladesh government is in constant dialogue with the US administration and is fully prepared to deal with the situation.

"We will take appropriate steps and continue the dialogue to ensure a favorable outcome," he said in a conversation with the media. This important meeting was chaired by veteran leader Mohammad Yunus, who has been playing an active role in guiding Bangladesh's economic policies.

Strategy to reduce trade deficit

The main reason for the Trump administration to increase tariffs is the unbalanced trade with countries that export more to the US and import less. In this context, financial advisor S.K. Bashir Uddin, who was present in the meeting, informed that Bangladesh is planning to increase imports from the US. This will improve the trade balance and also open up possibilities of renegotiation on tariffs.

Bashir Uddin indicated that Bangladesh will give priority to the import of important US products like cotton, fuel and industrial machinery. While this will benefit the US economically, Bangladesh will also get access to high quality resources.

Activity at diplomatic level

Khalilur Rahman said that many high-level US officials, including the US Trade Representative (USTR), are being contacted continuously. Bangladesh's aim is not only to reduce tariffs but also to further strengthen long-term bilateral trade relations.
