West Bengal News: Political fervour has intensified in recent times in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the construction of religious places. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir had proposed to build a mosque on the lines of Babri Masjid. Now in response to this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the construction of Ram temple. This development can give a new direction to religion-based polarization in the state's politics.BJP announces Ram templeThe BJP's Murshidabad unit has announced that the construction of Ram temple in Berhampur will begin from January 22, 2025. This date has been chosen symbolically a year after the inauguration of Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP's Berhampur organizational district president Shakharao Sarkar said that an estimated Rs 10 crore would be spent on the construction of the temple and land has already been marked for it.This announcement comes a few days after TMC MLA Humayun Kabir's statement, in which he said that he would build a mosque like Babri Masjid in Beldanga of Murshidabad district by 2025. Kabir's move is said to be an attempt to respect the sentiments of the minority population of the area.TMC distanced itselfHowever, TMC has distanced itself from Humayun Kabir's plan to build a mosque. TMC described it as Kabir's personal opinion and clarified that the party has nothing to do with this issue. Opposition BJP and Congress have sharply criticized Kabir's statement.Questions on BJP's strategyExperts believe that BJP's proposal to build Ram temple may be a strategy to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in the minority-dominated district of Murshidabad. BJP's base is relatively weak in this district with 75 percent minority population. The announcement of Ram temple construction is considered an attempt to increase BJP's political hold in this area.Danger of political polarizationSuch announcements on sensitive issues like Babri Masjid and Ram Mandir can fuel communal polarization in the region. This can prove to be a new beginning of dividing voters on religious grounds in West Bengal politics. While TMC has tried to maintain its secular image by distancing itself from Kabir's statement, BJP has tried to mobilize its supporters by announcing Ram Mandir.ConclusionThese announcements of construction of religious places in Murshidabad seem to be part of deeper political strategies, not just religious ones. In the coming days, the activities of political parties on these issues and the response of voters can determine the direction of the state's politics.
