Kolkata Rape-Murder Case / Supreme Court sets up national task force for doctors' safety

The hearing in the Kolkata rape-murder case is going on in the Supreme Court. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra has directed to form a task force to ensure the safety of doctors. A report has been sought from the CBI by August 22. The next hearing will be on August 23.

Kolkata Rape-Murder Case : The hearing in the Kolkata rape-murder case is going on in the Supreme Court. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra is hearing the case. The CJI said - A task force is being formed to improve the security of doctors, 9 doctors have been included in it, which will recommend measures for the safety, working conditions and betterment of medical professionals.

Five central government officials have also been included in the task force. The court has sought a status report from the CBI by August 22 and a report of the incident from the state government. The next hearing of the case will be on August 23.


Major points of the Supreme Court on the Kolkata case:

The CJI said that this is not just a horrific case of Kolkata, but it is a matter of safety of doctors of the country. Especially the issue of safety of women doctors and their working hours. A national consensus should be formed regarding the safety of women.

The Supreme Court said that the issue of rape is very worrying and the name of the victim has come in the media. Photos have been shown. The Supreme Court has decided that even the name of the rape victim should not be made public.

The CJI questioned Kapil Sibal, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the West Bengal government, saying that the murder was not clear in the FIR. Such a horrific crime took place and the crime scene was not preserved, what was the police doing?

The CJI said that we summon a status report from the CBI and a national task force should be formed. The Supreme Court formed a 10-member national task force headed by Surgeon-Major RP Sarin to prepare a national protocol.

The CJI asked at what time was the body handed over for cremation? Responding to the court, Kapil Sibal said that the body was handed over at 8:30 pm. On his answer, the CJI said that the FIR was registered 3 hours after the body was handed over, why was this done?

The Supreme Court said that so many protests are happening in the state, doctors, civil society, lawyers, all have expressed anger in this matter. You please be patient. We want the system to improve.
