MP Salary Hike / From facilities to salary... know how much the government spends on your MP

The central government has announced a 24% increase in the salary of MPs, which will be effective from April 1, 2023. The salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs will now be Rs 1.24 lakh per month. The pension of former MPs has also been increased to Rs 31,000. Other allowances have also increased.

MP Salary Hike: The Government of India has announced a 24% increase in the salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs) in both houses—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This increase will be effective from April 1, 2023, leading to a significant rise in the salaries and daily allowances of current MPs. Additionally, pensions for former MPs have also been increased.

Revised Salary and Pension Rates

Under this new policy by the central government:

  • The monthly salary of current MPs has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.24 lakh.

  • Daily allowance has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

  • Pension for former MPs has been increased from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month.

  • Additional pension for former MPs who served more than five years has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per month.

  • The basic salary of MPs has been increased from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.

Constituency Allowance and Office Expenses

MPs will now receive additional benefits and allowances:

  • Constituency allowance has been increased from ₹70,000 to ₹87,000 per month.

  • Office expenses have been raised from ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 per month.

    • ₹50,000 for computer operator services.

    • ₹25,000 for stationery expenses.

  • MPs can purchase furniture worth ₹1 lakh during their tenure, up from ₹80,000 earlier.

Additional Benefits for MPs

Apart from salary and allowances, MPs receive several other benefits:

  • 34 free air travel tickets per year (8 of which can be transferred to staff or colleagues).

  • Free travel in all classes of Indian Railways.

  • Official transport facility in Delhi during parliamentary sessions.

  • Government accommodation with:

    • 50,000 free electricity units annually.

    • 4 lakh liters of free water annually.

  • Free phone calls:

    • 1,50,000 free calls per year for Lok Sabha MPs.

    • 50,000 free calls per year for Rajya Sabha MPs.

  • Free medical facilities in both government and private hospitals.

  • Former MPs also receive free medical care under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).

  • Access to government vehicles, research assistance, and staff support.

  • Subsidized meals at the Parliament canteen.

Salary Hikes in States

Earlier, several states had also raised the salaries of their legislators. Recently, the Karnataka government doubled the salaries of its Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, and MLAs by 100%.
