The government has increased the salaries of Members of Parliament (MPs) by 24%, as per a notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday. Following this increase, each MP will now receive a salary of ₹1.24 lakh per month, up from ₹1 lakh earlier. This revision has been made based on the Cost Inflation Index and will be implemented from April 1, 2023.
History of MPs' Salary Increments
In 2018, the Narendra Modi government introduced a rule for reviewing MPs' salaries and allowances every five years, based on the inflation rate. Previously, in 2018, then-Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had increased MPs' salaries from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh and initiated an automatic revision process based on inflation.
Increase in Other Allowances and Pensions
The government has also increased MPs' daily allowances and pensions:

Daily Allowance: Increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

Former MPs' Pension: Raised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month.

Additional Pension: For MPs who served more than five years, the additional pension per year has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per month.
Other Allowances and Facilities for MPs
Apart from salaries, MPs receive several other benefits, including:
1. Constituency Allowance and Office Expenses

Constituency Allowance: Increased from ₹70,000 to ₹87,000 per month.

Office Expenses: Raised from ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 per month, including:

₹50,000 for a computer operator.

₹25,000 for stationery.

Furniture Allowance (One-time during tenure):

₹1 lakh for durable furniture.

₹25,000 for non-durable furniture.

2. Travel Allowance

Each MP gets 34 free air trips annually.

Free travel in all railway classes.

₹16 per km allowance for road travel.

Transport facility in Delhi during parliamentary sessions.

Concessions for retired MPs on rail and air travel.
3. Housing, Electricity, and Communication Facilities

Free government accommodation in Delhi.

50,000 free electricity units.

4 lakh liters of free water.

1,50,000 free calls for Lok Sabha MPs and 50,000 free calls for Rajya Sabha MPs.
4. Medical Facilities

Free medical treatment in government and private hospitals.

Free treatment at CGHS hospitals.

Government assistance for treatment abroad.

Former MPs and their spouses are also entitled to medical facilities.
5. Other Facilities

Access to government vehicles.

Availability of research and staff assistants.

Subsidized meals in the Parliament canteen.
