India-China Relation: India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks on Thursday in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Amid the ongoing border dispute between India and China in eastern Ladakh, the foreign ministers of the two countries met on the sidelines of the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and exchanged views. The main talks between the two leaders focused on border disputes and mutual relations.

'Ensuring peace on the border is important'

S Jaishankar and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military means to resolve border dispute issues in eastern Ladakh. In this meeting held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, Jaishankar told Wang that it is important to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and ensure peace in the border areas. Jaishankar also reiterated India's view that relations between the two sides should be based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.

'Not in the interest of both countries'

These leaders have met amid the ongoing border dispute between India and China in eastern Ladakh. During this, both the ministers agreed that the prolongation of the current situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side. Jaishankar stressed the need to redouble efforts to restore peace and harmony on the border to remove obstacles towards the return of normalcy in bilateral relations. He stressed the importance of fully adhering to bilateral agreements, protocols and understandings between the two governments in the past and said that the Line of Actual Control should be respected.

Both countries will resolve issues

In the meeting, both the ministers stressed on resolving the remaining issues as soon as possible. It was also agreed to continue and increase the meetings of diplomatic and military officials of both sides to take the discussion forward. The two leaders also agreed that the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) should hold a meeting soon. The Foreign Minister reiterated that India-China can improve relations by following mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests.

What did S Jaishankar say?

Regarding the meeting, S Jaishankar said on the social media platform 'X', "Met CPC Politburo member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Astana this morning. Discussed the early resolution of the remaining issues in the border areas. There was an agreement to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military means." He said, "It is important to respect the LAC and ensure peace in the border areas. Mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest will guide our bilateral relations." India believes that peace and stability in the border areas is important for normal relations between the two countries.
