HMPV Virus In India: Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases are increasing continuously in China, and meanwhile this virus has started spreading in India as well. Recently 8 cases of HMPV have been reported in India. The increasing number of this virus has become a cause of concern for people, and in some reports it is being compared to Covid-19. The question is, is this virus as dangerous as Covid-19, and can it cause devastation like Corona?

HMPV and Covid-19: Symptoms and mode of spread

Both HMPV and Covid viruses cause respiratory problems. HMPV is an RNA virus belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, while Covid-19 is a member of the coronavirus family. There are many similarities in the symptoms and mode of spread of these two viruses. The symptoms of HMPV are usually similar to those of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is a common viral infection in India. Like COVID-19, these viruses spread through contact with an infected person, touching infected surfaces, and droplets present in the air.

Prevention measures are also similar. To avoid HMPV, it is necessary to follow measures like wearing a mask, washing hands and social distancing.

Is HMPV as dangerous as corona?

Although the symptoms of HMPV and those of COVID-19 may be somewhat similar, according to experts, this virus is not as dangerous as COVID. According to a study conducted at Delhi AIIMS, HMPV is not a new virus and cases of it have been reported in India before. During this research, it was found that HMPV was found in only 5% of the total cases of respiratory infection.

This study also found that the mortality rate from HMPV is very low and most infected people recover within a few days. Only those people and children are at greater risk who have weak immunity or who already have a serious disease.

Experts' opinion:

According to Dr. Manoj Kumar Goyal, Director, Department of Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, there is no need to panic about HMPV. Most people infected with this virus face mild symptoms, such as cough, cold and mild fever. This virus is mainly active in the upper respiratory tract and the risk of reaching the lungs is very low. Severe symptoms occur only when a child's immunity is weak.

Symptoms of HMPV

Cough

Fever

Runny nose

Sore throat

Difficulty in breathing

Measures to prevent HMPV:

Wash hands before eating.

Avoid coming in contact with an infected person.

Get tested if you have cough, cold and fever.

Take special care of children and try to strengthen their immunity.

Conclusion:

HMPV is a common virus and is not as dangerous as COVID-19. However, this virus can affect children and individuals with weak immunity. Therefore, people should be cautious and seek medical advice as needed.
