India-China Relation: India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has recently described India-China relations as extremely important for the future of Asia and global politics. He said that the relationship between these two major Asian countries will have an impact not only on this continent but on the whole world. Jaishankar said this during an event 'India, Asia and the World' organized in New York, which was organized by the Asia Society and the Asia Society Policy Institute.Global impact of India-China relationsJaishankar said in his address, "India-China relations are important for the future of Asia. If the world has to be multipolar, then Asia will also have to be multipolar. This relationship will have an impact not only on Asia but also on the future of the whole world." However, he also admitted that the relationship between the two countries is currently tense.Difficult history and complex border disputeThe Foreign Minister mentioned the difficult history between India and China. He said that the two countries are neighbors with a population of more than a billion, and their border is 3,500 kilometers long. This border often overlaps, and the situation has become more complex with the global rise of both. “The parallel rise of India and China presents a unique challenge in global politics,” Jaishankar said.Disruption in patrolling arrangements after 2020Jaishankar also said that the patrolling arrangements on the India-China border have been disrupted since 2020. He said that “the patrolling arrangements have been disrupted after 2020, and it needs to be resolved. This is a big issue, as both the countries had deployed a large number of troops on the border.”Jaishankar said that many agreements between the two countries were made with the aim of maintaining peace and stability on the border. But, these agreements were violated due to the deployment of a large number of troops by China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020, leading to tension on the border. “The Chinese put up a large number of troops and we responded in the same way,” he said.Galwan Valley clashSpeaking on the 2020 clash in the Galwan Valley, Jaishankar said that when such a large number of troops are deployed on the border, the situation becomes extremely dangerous. "In such a situation, the possibility of accidents increases and that is what happened. Many soldiers of both the countries lost their lives in the clash, and since then the relations between the two countries have soured," he said.Efforts to restore peaceJaishankar said that it is most important to restore peace on the border and follow the agreements so that the relations between the two countries can improve. He said that "unless peace is restored on the border, it will be difficult to take forward other bilateral relations." For the last four years, India's primary focus has been on the withdrawal of troops from the border so that they can return to the military bases from where they traditionally operate.Importance of India-China relationsJaishankar clarified that the impact of India-China relations is not limited to the two countries only, but it will also have a wider impact on Asia and global politics. The importance of these relations increases even more for the stability and multipolarity of Asia.Jaishankar's statement makes it clear that India is moving forward in its strategy by keeping in mind the history, current disputes and future possibilities between the two countries. The balance of India-China relations will prove to be important not only for Asia but also for global stability.
