India-Guyana Relation: Prime Minister Narendra Modi created history by visiting Guyana for the first time in 56 years as an Indian Prime Minister. On his arrival in Georgetown on Wednesday, Guyana's President Mohammed Irfan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips and several cabinet ministers gave him a grand welcome. In this historic visit, PM Modi addressed a special session of the Guyana Parliament and gave new heights to the historical, cultural and democratic relations between the two countries.

Historical relations between India and Guyana

He said, "The relationship between India and Guyana is a relationship of soil, sweat and hard work. 180 years ago, people who came to Guyana from India made this land their karmabhoomi and this relationship has been shared in both happiness and sorrow since then till today." He also recalled the contribution of people of Indian origin on the land of Guyana.

Message of democracy and humanity

PM Modi gave the mantra of "Democracy First, Humanity First" in his speech. He said, "Democracy First teaches us that we have to take everyone along and decisions should be made keeping humanity at the center. When Humanity First is given priority, decisions are in the interest of humanity." He also said that Guyana's democratic traditions are helpful in strengthening global development.

Shared struggle from slavery to freedom

Pointing to the similar struggles of India and Guyana, PM Modi said that both the countries have equally felt the pain of slavery and the struggle for freedom. He paid tribute to the millions of people who sacrificed their lives for freedom. He said, "Both India and Guyana are global symbols of democracy today."

Old relationship with Guyana

Recalling his visit to Guyana 24 years ago, the Prime Minister said, "At that time I came to Guyana as a curious person. Guyana's heritage and history impressed me a lot. Even today there are people here who remember that visit of mine."

Honoured with Guyana's highest national award

During his address to the Guyana Parliament, PM Modi expressed his gratitude for being honoured with Guyana's highest national award. He said, "I dedicate this award to the 140 crore people of India. This honour is a symbol of the deepening relations between the two countries."

New direction for the future of both countries
