Election 2023: Assembly elections are to be held in five states in November-December this year. Governments are spending huge amounts of money before these elections. Now a public interest litigation regarding this has been filed in the Supreme Court. It has been said in this petition that the governments in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are distributing free newspapers before the elections. These should be banned. Now the Supreme Court has issued notice to MP, Rajasthan and Central Government regarding this.Gave four weeks time to replyThe bench of Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra has also issued notice to the Centre, Election Commission and Reserve Bank of India on the PIL. The petitioner has alleged that both the state governments are misusing taxpayers' money to lure voters. The lawyer representing the petitioner said, “Nothing can be worse than the government distributing cash before the elections. This happens every time and its burden ultimately falls on the taxpayers.'' The court has asked all the parties in this case to file their replies within four weeks. Many petitions have already been filedAlong with this, the court has also combined other ongoing petitions on this subject. Now all the cases will be heard together. Earlier in January 2022, BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay had reached the Supreme Court with a PIL against freebies. In his petition, Upadhyay had appealed to stop promises of freebies or free gifts to voters of political parties during elections. It was demanded that the Election Commission should cancel the recognition of such parties. Agreeing with Ashwini, the Central Government had appealed to the Supreme Court to decide the definition of freebies. The Center said that if distribution of freebies continues, it will lead the country to future economic disaster.
