Chandigarh. The Punjab Police on Sunday recovered an explosive device containing about 1.5 kg of RDX in a village in Tarn Taran district and arrested two persons. The IED, packed in a black metal box and weighing more than 2.5 kg, was also equipped with a timer, detonator, battery and sharpnails, police said. Due to the arrest and recovery, a possible terrorist attack in the border state was averted, he said.

Police said those arrested on Sunday have been identified as Baljinder Singh alias Bindu (22), a resident of Gujjarpura in Ajnala, Amritsar, and Jagtar alias Jagga (40), a resident of Ajnala. Two mobile phones and a motorcycle have also been seized from them. Baljinder Singh used to work as a nursing assistant in a private hospital in Ajnala, while Jagtar Singh works as a labourer.

The police arrested them when both of them were going on a motorcycle carrying IDs in a metal box. SSP Ranjit Singh said the IED was defused by the bomb disposal squad. Police say that both of them probably got involved in terrorist activities for money and drugs. ADGP RN Dhoke said that on the basis of secret information, the police carried out the action and caught both of them.

State security agencies have become alert after large quantities of RDX and IEDs were found. Three days earlier, on the basis of information received from Punjab Police, Haryana Police had arrested four people in Karnal, from whom three IEDs (of 2.5-2.5 kg) filled in metal cans were recovered.

In January also, before the elections, Punjab STF had recovered a huge amount of explosives in Dhanoa Kalan village, adjacent to the Pakistan border. The Special Task Force had recovered an IED weighing five kilograms and about 2.7 kilograms of RDX from the village. According to the Punjab Police, the explosives were sent from Pakistan with the intention of spreading panic. Giving great information, Rashpal Singh, AIG, STF Amritsar, said that we had received news about drugs, but when we reached the place of input, we found an IED weighing about 5 kg from a village near Wagah Achari border. AIG had said that we have also recovered one lakh rupees. It is believed that Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI is behind sending this RDX to Punjab.
