In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that has brought the world to a standstill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lauded India cricketer Suresh Raina for donating Rs 52 lakh to the COVID-19 relief fund.

Raina has pledged to donate Rs 31 lakh to Prime Minister’s CARES Fund and Rs 21 lakh to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Reacting to Raina’s generous donation, Modi reacted to his tweet and praised the batsman. “That’s a brilliant fifty, @ImRaina,” wrote PM Modi.

The stylish left-hander had also urged citizens to stay indoors during the 21-day lockdown period.

Not long back, Raina was in Chennai for the pre-IPL camp of the Chennai Super Kings. He trained with Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Piyush Chawla among others in the first week of March before the camp was suspended.

Meanwhile, with the coronavirus outbreak affecting most major sporting events, it is highly unlikely that the cash-rich Indian Premier League will take place.

During the testing times, sporting stars are coming forward and making significant contributions towards the relief funds. Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also donated Rs 50 lakh.

In India, the coronavirus positive cases have crossed the 1000-mark amid the 21-day lockdown.
