A 45-year-old brain dead man has given new life to two people in the capital. The family of the deceased decided to donate his kidney and kidney.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTO) allocated both the kidney and the cornea. One kidney was given to a 59-year-old woman at HCMCT Manipal Hospital and the other kidney was transplanted to a 51-year-old male at a private hospital. At the same time, both the corneas have been transferred to the eye bank.
Head of Critical Care of HCMCT Hospital Dr. Srikanth Srinivasan said that the patient was brought to the hospital on April 22 in an unconscious state. On examination it was found that he had suffered massive intracranial hemorrhage. Despite the effort, the patient's condition kept deteriorating and on Saturday he was declared brain dead.
Dr. (Col) Avneesh Seth said that when the family gave their consent for organ donation, both his kidneys were removed and transplanted successfully. The family saved the lives of two critically ill patients and has given the gift of visualization to two others.
Raman Bhaskar, director of the hospital, said that the slow and steady progress in the field of organ donation in the country is increasing the hope of saving the lives of many patients due to the availability of organs.
