Delhi: The state government has decided to recover damages caused to public and government property from the accused involved in the violence in Kanpur and Prayagraj earlier this month. Several government and private properties were reportedly damaged in the violence. The incidents came amid several protests over derogatory remarks on the Prophet by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The district administration and police teams have started collecting the details of the damage from various government departments. The departments have been asked to give details of the damages by sending letters. The public has been asked to come forward by making an announcement and inform about the damage done. The state government will make recovery under a new law, the Uttar Pradesh Recovery of Damage to Public and Private Property Act, 2020.
Additional Director General, Law and Order, Prashant Kumar said that those involved in the violence would be recovered. Sources said some government departments, including the police and the municipal corporation, have submitted details of the damages to the Prayagraj district administration and their total estimate is around Rs 40 lakh. Prayagraj District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Khatri said that some departments are yet to submit their loss details. Kanpur Police is assessing the damage done during the violence. Notices were issued to all the concerned departments. Kanpur Joint Commissioner Anand Prakash Tiwari said that I have to check the records of those who have not submitted the report yet.The district administration and the police team have decided to move a tribunal, requesting that recovery notices be issued to the accused allegedly involved in the damages. On June 3, clashes broke out in several parts of Kanpur district after a 'bandh' call was given by some minority groups who allegedly tried to force traders to close their shops. Both the groups clashed and pelted stones at each other. The situation was brought under control after the police team arrived and used force to disperse the crowd. Several people including policemen were injured in this clash.
