Delhi / Waterlogged forecourt of Delhi airport was cleared in 30 mins

After pictures of waterlogging at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport following incessant rainfall surfaced on social media on Saturday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted that the waterlogged forecourt was cleared within 30 minutes. Scindia also shared images of the airport after it was cleaned. Due to waterlogging, three flights were cancelled.

New Delhi: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday said the waterlogged forecourt of Delhi airport was cleaned within 30 minutes. Incessant rain on the day led to the flooding of parts of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi due to which three flights were cancelled and five others were diverted to Jaipur and Ahmedabad early today, according to a PTI report.

“Got in touch with the officials at the airport, and was told that the waterlogged forecourt was cleared up within 30 minutes,” tweeted Scindia after the incident at the Delhi airport was reported.

The Union Minister also posted a video of the cleaned forecourt of the airport within a few hours of videos, showing people wading through the water to reach the entry gate of the terminal, began circulating on social media.

The Aerocity area, which houses multiple luxury hotels, near the Delhi airport was seen waterlogged in the videos.

“Due to heavy downpour passengers encountered waterlogging for a short while. The on-ground team was immediately mobilized and the operations are back to normal since 9 am,” said Delhi International Airport Authority which manages the airport, in a statement issued on Twitter on Saturday.

The PTI report said five domestic flights were diverted on Saturday morning due to bad weather conditions.

Four domestic flights, two of SpiceJet and one each of IndiGo and Go First were diverted to Jaipur and one international flight, a Dubai-bound Emirates flight from Delhi, was diverted to Ahmedabad, it added.

Additionally, three IndiGo flights that were supposed to depart from Delhi on Saturday morning were cancelled due to rains.

Several parts of the national capital including areas such as Moti Bagh and RK Puram in south Delhi were waterlogged on Saturday. According to the meteorological department, Delhi-NCR has received 97 MM of rainfall since Friday morning.
