Biography of Rana Sanga

He was a powerful and famous king of Mewar in the 16th century. Rana Sanga made Mewar a strong and prosperous state during his reign. He was born on 12 April 1482 in Chittorgarh. He was the son of Rana Raimal and a member of the dynasty of Mewar. His full name was Maharana Sangram Singh, but he became famous as Rana Sanga.

Reign and military power

Rana Sanga became the successor of Mewar after the death of his father in 1509. The border of his kingdom extended to Agra in the east and Gujarat in the south. His army had 80 thousand horses, 500 elephants and about two lakh infantry soldiers. His army was superior in discipline, leadership and military training. His cavalry was extremely powerful and his infantry was also organized. This was the reason that his army dominated the enemies from the beginning of the war.

  • Rana Sanga fought many important wars in his life and achieved victory.
  • Battle of Khatoli (1517) – This war was fought between Rana Sanga and Sultan Ibrahim Lodi of Delhi, in which Rana Sanga defeated Ibrahim Lodi badly.
  • Dholpur War (1518-19) – Ibrahim Lodi attacked again to take revenge, but Rana Sanga defeated him again.
  • Malwa War (1517 and 1519) – Rana Sanga defeated Mahmud Khilji II, the ruler of Malwa, took him prisoner and later forgave him.
  • Defeat of Nizam Khan (1520) – He defeated Nizam Khan's army and captured North Gujarat.
  • Battle of Bayana (1527) – In this battle, he defeated Babur's army, which broke the morale of the Mughal army.
Khanwa War and the Last Time

Rana Sanga united and fought to stop the growing power of Babur. In the Battle of Khanwa in 1527, the armies of Babur and Rana Sanga faced each other. Although Rana Sanga faced defeat in this war, he became immortal in history due to his bravery. He had more than 80 wounds on his body, he was missing one eye, one hand and one leg, but still he fought till the last. He died on 30 January 1528.
