Train Accident: The opposition party is attacking the ruling party since the train accident in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The Kanchenjunga Express was hit from behind by a freight train in which 9 people died and many others were injured. From social media to all platforms, the opposition is claiming that rail accidents have increased in the current government. However, railway sources have released data and termed the opposition's claims as false.

How many accidents in whose government?

Railway sources claim that rail accidents are decreasing in the Modi government as compared to the Congress coalition government. According to the data, the average number of resulting train accidents during the period 2004-14 in the Congress coalition government was 171 per year. On the other hand, the average number of resulting train accidents has come down to 71 per year during the period 2014-23 in the Modi government.

Why are rail accidents decreasing?

Railways claim that the reason behind this is the efficient management of the railways and many such measures have been taken which have reduced such accidents. Railways claim that Rs 45,000 crore has been spent to eliminate accidents caused by human failure. Electrical/electronic interlocking systems with centralized operation of points and signals have been provided at 6498 stations by October 2023. Along with this, interlocking of level crossing (LC) gates has been provided at 11137 level crossing gates by 31.10.2023 to increase safety at LC gates.
