Coronavirus / Coronavirus cases in India cross 2,000, death toll rises to 53

The total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 2,069, while the death toll in the country has surged to 53. The confirmed cases comprise 2,014 Indian nationals and remaining are foreign nationals. The number of patients who have been cured or discharged is 155. Cases have been reported in 29 states and Union Territories.

New Delhi: On day-9 of the nationwide lockdown imposed in view of coronavirus pandemic, the number of infected people stand at 2,069 in India and death toll in the country is at 53, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference with chief ministers of all states on Thursday and asked them to send suggestions on how the country could smoothly exit the lockdown. The 21-day lockdown will end on April 14.

“In the next few weeks, testing, tracing, isolation and quarantine should remain the areas of focus,”  PM Modi told the chief ministers. 

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide is fast approaching the one million mark. "In the past five weeks there has been a near-exponential growth in the number of new cases and the number of deaths has more than doubled in the past week," the head of World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference at the organisation's Geneva headquarters on Wednesday. "In the next few days we will reach 1 million confirmed cases and 50,000 deaths worldwide," he said.
