Jammu Kashmir Assembly: Five years ago, the central government abolished the sections giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir by removing Article 370. Since then, Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized, and it got the status of a Union Territory. However, the issue of withdrawal of Article 370 still remains the center of discussion and controversy. Recently, there was a ruckus again in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. There was a fierce struggle between the ruling party and the opposition BJP over passing the resolution in the assembly, even a scuffle came and the MLAs were taken out with the help of the marshal.

Abdullah government's initiative on 370 and BJP's opposition

A proposal to restore Article 370 was passed in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, to which the BJP strongly opposed. The BJP alleged that the proposal to restore 370 was prepared by the Speaker of the Assembly himself, which shows support for the National Conference. BJP claims that the National Conference is misleading the people of Jammu and Kashmir, because no resolution of the state assembly can restore Article 370 and 35A repealed by the Center.

Why did the scuffle come to an end?

The uproar started when Lengt MLA Khurshid Ahmed Sheikh waved a banner in the assembly supporting the return of 370. It was written on the banner that they want the restoration of Article 370 and 35A and the release of all political prisoners. BJP MLAs opposed this banner and tried to snatch it, after which the dispute escalated so much that there was pushing and shoving and scuffle between the two sides.

During this, MLAs of the ruling party and the opposition were seen holding each other's collars, and eventually the marshals took them out of the House. Due to the entire controversy, the proceedings of the assembly were adjourned.

Omar Abdullah's reaction

During this uproar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was also present in the assembly. But amid the uproar, he remained calmly seated on his seat and kept watching the entire incident. This behaviour surprised some, as despite their presence, peace could not be maintained in the assembly.

Is restoration of 370 possible?

The BJP has categorically claimed that restoration of Article 370 is impossible. From a constitutional point of view, restoration of Article 370 requires passing of a law in Parliament and approval of the President. Therefore, any resolution passed by the state assembly is not binding, and can be seen as a mere formality. The Modi government's stand is clear in this matter - it will oppose any move to restore 370.

Reason for confrontation between National Conference and BJP

This controversy has further increased the already existing political tension between the National Conference and the BJP. The BJP believes that the National Conference wants to provoke people once again by raising the issue of Article 370 in the state. On the contrary, the National Conference argues that Article 370 and 35A are issues related to the identity and special rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the abolition of which was wrong.

Conclusion

The uproar and debate over Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir is constantly increasing. This issue remains a sensitive topic not only in the state but in the entire country. While the National Conference wants to reinstate it, the BJP is strongly opposing it. In such a situation, the recent developments in the Assembly proved that the issue of 370 is still an important aspect of the politics of Jammu and Kashmir.
