Team India New Coach: Team India has got a new head coach and proving all the speculations right, BCCI has given the responsibility of Team India to former star opener Gautam Gambhir. BCCI secretary Jay Shah welcomed Gambhir to Team India by announcing his name on Tuesday, July 9. Till last month, Gambhir was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, where under his leadership, KKR won the IPL 2024 title after a long wait of 10 years.

Gautam Gambhir will replace Rahul Dravid as coach, who ended his journey with Team India's victory in the T20 World Cup final. Gambhir's becoming the coach was being expected for a long time. The BCCI was in touch with him since Kolkata became the IPL champion while he was the mentor, after which Gambhir formally applied and then also gave an interview to the Cricket Advisory Committee last month.

Gambhir is the ideal person for Indian cricket

Jay Shah announced Gambhir's name in a post on the social media platform X and said that modern cricket is changing rapidly and Gambhir has seen these changes closely. Praising Gambhir's hard work and success in different roles, Shah expressed confidence that Gambhir is the most ideal person to take Indian cricket forward.

Describing Gautam Gambhir's clear vision and long experience as important for Team India, Shah called him the right choice for the coach of the world's most popular cricket team and also assured him of full support from the BCCI.

How long will he remain the head coach?

Rahul Dravid became the coach of Team India in November 2021 and was given a tenure of 2 years. Dravid's time ended with the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, but despite this, the BCCI gave him an extension till the T20 World Cup. Gambhir, however, will get a long tenure from the beginning. When the BCCI issued an advertisement for the new head coach in May, it was made clear at that time that the tenure of the new coach would be till 31 December 20207 i.e. 3 and a half years.

The Indian team has a target of winning 2 ICC trophies in the next one year

After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, while Team India ended the 11-year ICC trophy drought, now their next target is going to be to win the 2 ICC trophies to be held in the next one year. This responsibility is going to be very big for the new head coach. While Team India has to play in the Champions Trophy in the beginning of the year 2025, if the Indian team succeeds in reaching the final of the ICC World Test Championship, then it will also have a target of winning, the title match of which will be played in June 2025.
