Mother Karani was born as the sixth child of Mehaji Charan in Suvap village near Phalodi in the Charan clan about six and a half years ago. She is worshiped as the incarnation of the warrior goddess Durga by her followers. The grand temple of Maa is located in Deshnok, thirty km away from Bikaner district of Rajasthan. The temple is famous for its white rats, which are treated as sacred and given protection.

In the Vikram Samvat 1444 mother Karani was born as the sixth child of Mehaji Charan in Suvap village near Phalodi. Mata's Birth name was Riddhabai. Impressed by miracles, she was named Karni. Karni Mata was born in the Charan clan about six and a half years ago. From birth, the miracles of mother have been surprising people from time to time.

It is said that the mother lived in a cave and worshiped her favorite. After the mother Karani was absorbed in the light, her idol was placed in this cave located in Deshnok temple, according to her wish, the grand temple of Maa is located in Deshnok, thirty kilometers away from Bikaner district of Rajasthan along with this mother Marani Charan is worshiped throughout the country as Kuldevi and Rathore as the presiding deity. The temple is famous for its white rats, which are treated as sacred and given protection in the temple. 

She is an official deity of the royal families of Jodhpur and Bikaner. She lived an ascetic life and was widely revered during her own lifetime. At the request of the Maharajas of Bikaner and Jodhpur, she laid the foundation stones of Bikaner Fort and Mehrangarh Fort, the two most important forts in the region. Another temple dedicated to her during her lifetime differs from others in that it does not contain an image or idol of her, but rather a footprint to symbolize her visit to that place. Karni Mata is also known as “dadi wali dokri".
