IND vs BAN: The Irani Cup match in Indian domestic cricket will be played in Lucknow from 1 to 5 October next month, where Mumbai and Rest of India will face each other. As per the BCCI's decision, Mumbai's middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan may get a chance to play in the Irani Cup by being released from the Indian Test team. However, Sarfaraz is very unlikely to play in the second Test against Bangladesh, which is starting from September 27 at Green Park, Kanpur.

Sarfaraz's wait extended

According to the Times of India report, if there is no injury problem in the Indian team, Sarfaraz will get a chance to play in the Mumbai team for the Irani Cup. This means that he will have to wait longer to confirm his place in Test cricket. KL Rahul may play at number six in the second Test, which will not give Sarfaraz an opportunity.

Important players in Mumbai's team

Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai will be captained by Ajinkya Rahane, while all-rounder Shardul Thakur will return to first class cricket from the Irani Cup after recovering from surgery. Mumbai's team will also include players like Shreyas Iyer, Mushir Khan, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian.

Sarfaraz's participation doubtful

Sarfaraz's participation in the Irani Cup is not yet confirmed, but chief selector Ajit Agarkar believes that barring any untoward incident, Sarfaraz will be released from the Indian team so that he can play the Irani Cup. The distance from Kanpur to Lucknow is just an hour, so Sarfaraz can go to play in the Irani Cup even after the Test match starts.

Tushar Deshpande's absence

Mumbai will announce the team on September 24. However, their fast bowler Tushar Deshpande will not be able to play in this match, as he has recently undergone surgery on his ankle and knee. Deshpande may return in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in November.
