Couples living in Harpenden, Herts, England, usually spend around £1300 per year (over 1 lakh thirty thousand) on their gas and electricity. This thing came to light after the couple complained

Fortunately, the couple did not have that much amount, else the entire money would have been auto-deducted. When the matter escalated, Shell Energy assured them that it was a technical fault. This amount accounts for 15 per cent of the UK's total household spending on gas and electricity, £12.1 billion.

Shell Energy's statement came later

A Shell Energy spokesperson said: "It was an error in our app that affected a small number of customers, and we do not expect Sam and Maddy to pay for the world's gas supply." Any customer with the same app error can be assured that it will not affect their Direct Debit payment.
