Chief Justice of India: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit is retiring on November 8, as his tenure is only for 74 days. Earlier, the Government of India has recommended the CJI to nominate his successor. By sending a letter, he has been asked to send recommendations for the appointment of his successor. The Ministry of Law and Justice has probably given information in this regard by tweeting for the first time.Under the Memorandum Process (MOP) relating to the process of appointment of judges in the Supreme Court, the retiring Jeff Justice begins the process of recommending the name of his successor after receiving a letter from the Law Ministry.Who will be the next Chief Justice?Justice DY Chandrachud is the senior most judge after CGI and the main contender for this post. The Chief Justice nominates the senior-most judge as his successor. According to tradition, Justice Chandrachud could be the 50th Chief Justice of the country and he could take oath as the CJI on November 9.Justice Chandrachud's tenure will be for 2 yearsIf Justice DY Chandrachud becomes the next CJI, then his term will be for two years. He will retire on 10 November 2024. Judges of the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65 and judges of the High Court at the age of 62.
