India-Qatar Relation: A Qatar court has awarded death sentence to 8 former Indian Navy personnel who have been detained for more than a year. India has been in touch with Qatari officials at the diplomatic level on this matter for several days. Meanwhile, a big statement has come from the Foreign Ministry. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Thursday (22 December) that a Qatari court has heard thrice the appeal filed by eight former Indian Navy personnel. An appeal was filed in the Qatar court on behalf of the former personnel against the death sentence awarded to them. Bagchi said that India is working to bring them back safely. Actually, 8 former employees have been jailed in espionage cases.In this regard, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a discussion with the media that the ruler of Qatar has pardoned many other prisoners including Indian citizens on the occasion of National Day celebrated there on December 18. However, the Indian side has not yet been able to clarify what is the identity of the Indians whose sentences have been waived. For this reason, it is not clear whether those who have been pardoned include 8 former Indian Navy personnel or not? These former naval personnel are facing death penalty in Qatar.Know what the Indian Foreign Ministry said?According to media reports, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that 'the matter is now in the Court of Appeal of Qatar. This case was heard a total of three times, on 23 November, 30 November and 7 December. Meanwhile, the Indian Ambassador present in the capital Doha got consular access to meet all of them on 3 December. Apart from this, we do not have any other details which can be shared. Arindam Bagchi said that the Indian side does not yet know whether those 8 former Navy personnel are also included among the Indians whose sentences have been waived in Qatar. But it is known that some of them are Indians.Indian prisoners accused of spying for IsraelAccording to media reports, these former officers, who have worked in various positions in the Indian Navy, are accused of spying for Israel. The report claimed that the arrested officers provided details of Qatar's secret program to purchase advanced submarines from Italy. The names of the former Navy officers who were arrested in Qatar are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vashishtha, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunkar Pakla, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh.
