India / BJP leads on 5 seats, SP on 1 in Uttar Pradesh Assembly by-polls

According to the Election Commission trends, BJP is leading on five Assembly seats out of the seven seats that went for by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party and an Independent candidate are leading on one seat each. By-polls were necessitated after the deaths of five sitting MLAs, while one seat fell vacant after an MLA was elected to Lok Sabha.

Lucknow: The result for the Uttar Pradesh bypolls will be announced on Tuesday. The counting of votes has begun across seven assembly seats --Naugaon Sadat, Tundla, Bangarmau, Bulandshahr, Deoria, Ghatampur and Malhani. An average of over 53 per cent voters had exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 88 candidates in the fray. Voting in the bypolls was held on November 3.

The fight is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP). Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad's Azad Samaj Party has also fielded its candidate, Mohammad Yameen, in Bulandshahr to test its electoral popularity.
