New Delhi : The Chief Justice of the country, NV Ramana, may be the master of roster and distribute cases for hearing in 16 benches of the court, but it is not necessary that despite the order in many cases, the case reaches the bench for hearing. They are helpless before the Supreme Court registry regarding the listing of cases. The Chief Justice was aggrieved by the Registry's removal of a case listed for hearing on Wednesday. Said that he would speak on this issue in his farewell speech on 26th.

On Wednesday, a senior lawyer before the Chief Justice said that his case was listed, but later it was removed from the list. On this, Justice Ramana said that there are many issues which he wants to raise, but he does not want to speak before leaving office. I will definitely speak in my farewell speech.

The senior counsel said that last-minute removal of the case from the list creates problems. We prepare till eight o'clock in the night. Talks are also held with the plaintiff. The next day when the opportunity of hearing comes, it is found that some other case is listed in its place.

officers were seated in court

Last week, a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud had sought the response of the registry officials as to why it was not imposed despite the order to hold the trial on a fixed day. Earlier, a Chief Justice had made the officers of the registry sit in the court itself and asked them to listen to how the lawyers complain.

'It was difficult to change the hat of the orderly'

The red tape in the registry is such that a judge had to make a lot of effort to get his orderly's torn cap replaced. This judge later also became the Chief Justice of the country. The judge while sharing his experience said that when he asked the orderly about the cap, he told that despite trying many times, I am not able to get it changed. On this the judge called the registry, but nothing came of it. Then the orderly's cap could be changed after two months of writing.

what is registry

The Supreme Court Registry (the office that accepts all documents and proceeds on them) allocates cases on the orders of the Chief Justice. The Supreme Court roster is based on broadly classified 'subjects'. When a new case is filed in the court, it is put under a 'subject'. The Registry consists of six Registrars, headed by the Secretary General. Its officers are judicial officers of the rank of District Judge.
